MBS Confiscates Fake, Defective Fertilizer

As the country in the agriculture season, Malawi Bureau of standards MBS says it has confiscated consignments of fake and defectives bags of fertilizers from August to October this year.

Speaking during a press briefing organized to update the public recall orders that the bureau has made, director of metrology Thom Senganimalunje said such cases increase during the agriculture season.

Senganimalunje said the confiscations of fake and defected fertilizers have been done in Blantyre and Mzuzu and so far the culprits have been arrested.

He said increased technical capacity, collaborations and resources are among the factors that have helped the bureau to achieve its mandate.

Meanwhile Senganimalunje says MBS has also made recalls as confiscation on steel bars, diapers, zest cola and SOBO Orange due to quality parameters, tampering with the dates, critical non-compliance on food safety parameters and illegal date code extension respectively.

He said the culprits have been awarded various punishments including confiscations and fines ranging from 1 million to 3 million kwacha.
