MCP Declares Running Mate

Malawi Congress Party MCP has declared that Muhammad Sidik Mia is the running of president Dr Lazarus Chakwera in 2019 tripartite elections.

Chakwera made the declaration during a political rally held in Mangochi district on 2 December, 2018 ending reports that the two are no longer in good books.

Chakwera and Mia were elected president and vice president during MCP convention which was held in the Capital City, Lilongwe.

Commenting, one of the country’s political commentators has hailed MCP for coming up clearly and declaring the party’s running mate in next year’s polls.

But reacting to the development, Lilongwe based political commentator, Vincent Kondowe, said the appointment will add value to MCP as it has been struggling to get votes from the southern region.

“Mia will now be empowered to campaign whole heartedly because he know that once the party is voted into power he will definitely become Vice President,” Kondowe said.

He however called on other political parties to come out clearly on the running mate because it provides more time to campaign as a team.

It has been a trend that presidential candidates keep their choices of the running mate closed until the day of presenting the nomination letters to Malawi electoral Commission.
