MEC receives Voters’ Register Missing Records Report
Malawi Electoral Commission MEC says has received reports of missing records in the preliminary voters’ register in some centres
In a public statement the commission says has immediately commenced a process of establishing the cause of the missing records and how this will be rectified
MEC has emphasised that the voter registration data remains preliminary until it has been provided to voters, political parties, candidates, civil society organisations and other observers for inspection for purposes of verifying all entries in the voters’ register
Therefore the commission assures the public that there is no cause for alarm as the inspection and verification stage is to address cases like these
Director of media and public relations Sangwani Mwafulirwa says inspection and verification is the next activity in the electoral calendar
Mwafulirwa says the commission will ensure that the final voters’ register contains all records assuring all registered voters that their details remain intact and no duly registered voter will be disenfranchised
According to MEC those whose records are missing but presented themselves to transfer their records will be assisted in due course
The commission says will hold a meeting with stakeholders to update them before the commencement of the inspection of the voters’ register
It has called upon political parties, civil society organisations and the public to remain engaged in electoral processes and support the commission in ensuring that elections are conducted in a free, fair and credible manner
