Mother kills son, commits suicide

A 17 year old mother and her 3 year old son have hanged to death in Divala village sub TA Mtonda in Mangochi District.

Public relations officer for Mangochi Police Inspector Rodreck Maida has identified the deceased as Gertrude Gwedemula and Talandira William.

Maida said Gertrude was in a relationship with William Joza in 2014 and the two promised to get married.

“The same year Gertrude became pregnant and gave birth to Talandira but William was not ready to marry her. After three years without marriage arrangements, they agreed to solve the issue on 30th April, 2017 at William’s parents’ house,” explains Maida

However, angered with William’s lie Gertrude took advantage of the absence of her parents hanging her 3 year old son with a rope in a nearby mango tree.

“After the child died Gertrude ran away from her parents’ house only to be found dead on 1st May, 2017 hanging herself with a rope in another nearby mango tree,” Maida said.

The parents informed police of the incident and the bodies were sent to Chilipa health Centre.

Meanwhile, police in Mangochi is advising people in the district they should seek advice from elders when they have been disappointed.
