MPS Demands HRDC To Suspend Demonstrations

Malawi Police Service MPS has demanded Human Rights Defenders Coalition HRDC to suspend demonstrations aimed at forcing chairperson of Malawi Electoral Commission Justice Dr Jane Ansah to resign.

Speaking during a press conference at national police headquarters in Lilongwe Inspector General of police Rodney Jose confirmed he had written a letter to HRDC to suspend the continued demonstrations.

Jose said “the demonstrations have not been peaceful as claimed by HRDC hence damaging property, attacking police officers and innocent Malawians.”

In his remarks army commander Vincent Nundwe said Malawi Defence Force MDF is working hand in hand with police after realizing that there are some shortfalls in providing security to demonstrators

Nundwe said that it is constitutional to support police and emphasized that MDF will continue do whenever the demonstrations turn violent.
