Over 6 million Malawians register for national IDs
More than 6 million Malawians have registered in three phases of mass national registration.
Out of them 2 million, two hundred and twenty two thousand people registered in the third phase.
Speaking during a joint press conference in Blantyre, minister of home affairs and internal security Grace Chiumia said the projected figure was 2,256,000.
“Out of the five districts in the third phase Chiradzulu registered the lowest percentage because many people commute to Blantyre to work therefore they registered in the city,” said Chiumia.
Speaking on behalf of NRB chief technical advisor, Tarik Malik said they have put in place measures to ensure smooth running of the remaining phases.
“We have secured enough batteries as a backup to solar bio metric machines as they roll out the exercise in the northern region,”
He said foreigners cannot register because they scrutinize the data before printing.
“People who registered in the first phase will get their id’s in the first week of October because printing has begun,” revealed the chief advisor.
Meanwhile, 180 registration workers have resigned on various reasons.
