Big Tree Falls On People

Falling tree has killed a man, injuring 3 others and damaging property in Mangochi district.

Deputy police spokesperson Sergeant Amina Tepan Daud said the deceased Amadu Makwemba aged 35 was hit by a falling branch of Fig tree.

Daud added that the incident occurred on Tuesday morning at Mthundu Trading Centre along Mangochi-Makanjira road.

During the wee hours of the day the branch of the Fig tree fell on four shops destroying properties and blocked the road in the process. Around 6 o’clock community members assembled at the Trading centre and were clearing the road as well as surroundings in order to resume their usual businesses, Daudi explained

She added that amidst the clearance, another branch fell from the same tree hitting Makwemba on the chest and he died on the spot.

Daud also said Esnart Kalimanjira (65) who was fetching firewood was seriously injured and part of her right foot is amputated and two people who sustained minor injuries were treated as out-patients.

Postmortem at Mangochi district hospital revealed that death was due to internal bleeding from multiple fractures.

She further said in the meantime the estimated value of damaged properties is eleven million kwacha.

Amadu Makwemba hailed from Steven 2 village in the area of traditional authority Chowe in Mangochi.
