Zomba City has New Mayor
Zomba city Council has elected councilor Christopher Jana of Mpira ward in Zomba central constituency as a new mayor during elections held on Friday.
Jana won the polls by 5 votes against the outgoing mayor councilor Melia Douglas and councilor Eddah Mkula who scooped 3 votes each.
In his acceptance speech the newly elected Zomba city mayor thanked the outgoing mayor for her outstanding services and leadership during one and half year period.
“I promise to continue with all the projects which are on the pipeline such as roads maintenance, street lights and bridges in order to fulfill the visionary leadership of president professor Peter Mutharika,” Jana said
However, he announced his defection to Democratic Progressive party DPP from PP but denied allegations that he joined the party because he received money from DPP officials.
Commenting on the outcome of the elections spokesperson of Ministry of local government and rural development Mushawase Muwowo who witnessed the elections sad she was happy with the outcome of the elections.
“Minstry of Local government will support the mayor just as it does with other mayors in other cities in the country,” Muwowo said.
Three councilors Fadwick Lipenga, Chikhulupiriro Jim and Jameson Mulekere withdrew from the contest.
