Ripple Africa Calls for Fishing By-laws In Malawi

Ripple Africa has called on Lakeshore districts to formulate fisheries by-laws in a drive to contain further depletion of fish in the lakes.

Executive director of Ripple Africa Force Ngwira made the call during Nkhotakota district executive committee meeting aimed at briefing the members on the negative impact of using intolerable fishing methods.

Speaking Ngwira said use of illegal fishing gears has put many fish species at danger of extinction.

“The by-laws such as restriction of using mosquito nets to catch fish will help to restore some of the species such as Mpasa and Chambo,” Ngwira said

Therefore he called for a unified approach among various partners in sensitizing communities on the significance of adhering to the laws once implemented.
