BCC bans large gatherings

Blantyre City Council BCC has banned all large gatherings including street vending, weddings and parties.

In a statement issued on 30th March Mayor of the city Wild Ndipo says the ban will ensure that residents are protected from coronavirus disease COVID-19.

Ndipo says the council has also placed limitations of religious gatherings and introduced mandatory preventive measures for shopping centres, public buses, banks, hospitality industry and all other public places.

“BCC will work with security agencies to enforce these bans. The council advises conveners to limit the number of people attending funerals and other emergencies, provide water buckets and hand washing soap displayed at strategic places,” says Ndipo

The council also advises vendors who were plying their trade along the streets to relocate immediately to designated markets where water buckets mixed with chlorine have been placed.

Ndipo has urged residents to join the council in the fight against the pandemic.

“Meanwhile Blantyre city council has declared a month long “make you environment coronavirus free campaign” to ensure that every resident is abiding by the measures,” BCC mayor adds

Ndipo has warned that the council will use available legislation to ensure the set hygiene standards are complied with and residents protected.

The council appeals to residents to use the toll free line 526 for any inquiries.
