Demonstrators Destroy Armored Police Vehicle & Houses

Demonstrators in Malawi have burnt an armored police vehicle and a house in the capital city Lilongwe after the driver and police officers run away from teargas.

The demonstrators have damaged many police houses near Simama Hotel in the city.

The conflict erupted after the protesters converged to prepare for the demonstrations.

While there many police officers arrived in their vehicles and the demonstrators started chasing them.

The law enforcers retaliated with tear gas which affected a driver of one vehicle of the police.

Therefore the driver and the police officers run for their lives leaving the vehicle behind.

As a result the demonstrators burnt the vehicle hence the police officers dispersed them.

Later the protestors returned to their venue for the 1 million March organized by Human Rights Defenders Coalition HRDC.

Malawians converged for the protests after High court judge Kenyatta Nyirenda dismissed an application by attorney general for an injunction to stop the demonstrations.

In Blantyre UTM President Dr Saulos Chilima and vice president of MCP participated in the elections.

Malawi defense force soldiers have provided protection to the demonstrators.

In his speech chairperson of HRDC in Blantyre Masauko Thawe urged the demonstrators to be peaceful.

In their remarks MCP Campaign director Moses Kunkuyu and UTM vice president Michael Usi said participation of politicians in the demonstrations is the exercise of their rights as stipulated in the constitution.

Meanwhile, MCP and UTM have commended courts for upholding rule of law in the country.

Vice president of MCP Sidik Mia and President of UTM have said this in Blantyre during ant-Ansah demonstrations in the city.

Chilima said the courts have so far upheld the right to demonstrate by throwing out an injunction by attorney general which is the maturity of democracy in Malawi.

He called upon Malawians to demonstrate without fear as it is their right.

Speaking Mia said MCP will continue to stand with Human Rights Defenders Coalition HRDC in demanding justice on the 21st May tripartite elections.

Mia strongly said the party and its supporters will not back down until Jane Ansah resigns and justice prevails in the matter.

In Mzuzu the demonstrations delayed though the demonstrators converged since morning.

However, Ministry of information said government did not give permission to hold demonstrations in the three cities.

HRDC organized the 1 million march as a new strategy to force chairperson of Malawi Electoral Commission to resign.
