Government partners NGO’s in literacy programs
Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has reiterated the need to partner with nongovernmental organisations in improving literacy levels among girls and boys in Malawi.
Deputy Director for basic education Ellen simango made the remarks during a start up workshop on Malawi literacy empowerment through action research and networking in Lilongwe.
“The project is complementing the national reading program in 13 districts. Its main goal is to improve literacy and essential life skills of boys and girls,” explained Simango.
She said government has created a conducive environment for education stakeholders to implement literacy activities.
“Among other things the project facilitates capacity building of teachers and caregivers as well as provision of teaching and learning materials,” Simango said.
WFP and WVM have partnered in contributing 800, 000 US dollars for the one year literacy project.
