Malawi commemorates world radio day

Malawi National Commission for UNESCO has expressed concern over discrimination of women in media industry.

Assistant executive Secretary for UNESCO Malawi Christopher Magomelo made the remarks during the commemoration of world radio day in Monkey bay under the theme “Radio and sports.”

Magomelo said UNESCO’s report on Global Media Monitoring project shows that only 4% of sports content is dedicated to women’s sports and only 12 % of sports news is presented by women.

“UNESCO is working hard to improve the coverage of women’s sports in order to combat gender discrimination on the airwaves,” said Magomelo

In his speech director general of Malawi communications Regulatory Authority MACRA Godfrey Itaye commended the media on the improved dissemination of information to the society.

Etayi said Radio stations in the country are following their code of conduct and working professionally.
