Diplomatic Community Commends MEC For Successful Voter Registration

Malawi’s diplomatic community has commended Malawi Electoral Commission MEC for successful registration of 6.8 million Malawians who will vote in 2019 tripartite elections.

The community comprises British High Commission, Embassy of Iceland, Embassy of Ireland, Embassy of Japan, Embassy of the United States of America, Royal Norwegian Embassy, Mozambican High Commission, South African High Commission and Zambian High Commission

A statement released by 9 diplomatic missions, says “the success of the first ever biometric registration will ensure that Malawi has a credible and comprehensive voter’s roll.”

However, the missions have bemoaned the theft of two biometric kits describing it as unfortunate.

“Police service to thoroughly investigate the case of the biometric kits, and bring perpetrators to face justice. Missions requested MEC to ensure it provides information to the public in time,” adds the statement

Meanwhile, the diplomatic community has urged electoral stakeholders to continue engaging in constructive dialogue around elections so that masses have confidence of the electorates.

The missions have encouraged voters to check their names in the voters’ roll which will be released in the coming weeks for public review and verification
