Government suspends Sim Card registration

Malawi government has suspended national sim card mobile phone registration exercise.

Minister of information and government spokesperson Nicholus Dausi has announced this in parliament today.

Dausi says government has considered some concerns that have been raised by the public towards the exercise.

“The next step for the exercise will be announced after thorough civic education has been carried out,” said Dausi.

On Monday some members of parliament including Nkhata Bay central constituency representative Ralph Mhone said the provision for SIM card registration could be impinging on people’s rights to privacy.

However, Dausi refuted this allegation and was quick to say that the issue will be addressed during the civic education exercise.

The SIM card mobile phone registration exercise rolled out in January this year and was expected to end on 31 March.
