Malawi Opposition Parties Discuss Coalition

Three opposition political parties are planning to form coalition in Malawi ahead of 2019 tripartite elections.

The parties are the main opposition Malawi Congress Party, People’s Party and UTM.

Reacting to this, Chancellor College based lecturer Enerst Thindwa, told Radio Islam that the partnership is a welcome move if the parties are to unseat the ruling government.

However, Thindwa expressed doubts over the possible partnership saying each party feels that it is powerful.

“I think that Dr Chakwera president of MCP and Dr Chilima of UTM can lead the coalition,” Thindwa said

Another political analyst George Phiri from University of Livingstonia said the partnership is likely to flop if the parties are moved by fear of losing the elections.

However, Phiri advised the parties to discuss the issue seriously and agree to move on the same political ideologies in order to succeed in next year’s polls.

In 2009 UDF and MCP formed a coalition and in 2014 some political parties formed Mgwirizano coalition which failed the elections.
