Malawi Court Grants Bail To Suspect Of Likening First Lady To Cartoon

Blantyre magistrate court has granted bail to a man Tumpale Mwakiwinga who was arrested for allegedly posting a picture likening first lady Gertrude Mutharika to a cartoon.

Magistrate Soka Banda has ordered Makiwinga to pay non cash bond of 100, 000 kwacha, not to post anything on social media relating to Getrude and report to southern region police once a month.

Banda said trial of the case will be held on 31st May.

Mwakiwinga was charged with insulting the modesty of a woman, cyber violation and offensive communication but denied all the charges.

Applying for bail his lawyer Gloria Mbendera said his client had already demonstrated that he is a law-abiding citixen by presenting himself to court when he heard that they were looking for him.

However regional prosecutions officer Dickens Mwambaxi asked the court to allo the state keep Mwakiwinga for 7 more days for them to complete investigations.
