Malawi to hold 2018 population census

National Statistical Office (NSO) has asked Malawians to cooperate in the 2018 population and housing census which will be conducted in September.

NSO Commissioner Mercy Kanyuka said this in an interview with Radio Islam ahead of the census which will held from 3 to 23 September, 2018.

Kanyuka said census is very important because government will know the number of people it should take care of.

“This year’s census is different from the previous ones because it will use electronic gadgets and we have already received 15, 000 tablets from donors,” Kanyuka said

She said recruitment of enumerators has already taken place in all districts.

“We have recruited 20, 000 enumerators who will do the population and housing census,” Kanyuka said.

Speaking during a media briefing in Blantyre on the preparation for the census Kanyuka asked journalists to sensitize the general public on the census.

She refuted allegations that recruitment process was marred by malpractices as some officers were recruiting their relatives.

Money amounting to 15.5 billion kwacha has been allocated in the census.
