Power blackouts to significantly drop by December 2022-Chakwera

President Dr Lazarus Chakwera says power blackouts which the country is experiencing, will significantly drop by the end of this year.

Chakwera disclosed this during the inauguration of 20 megawatts Golomoti solar power plant project in Dedza.

Chakwera said they have secured 60 million dollars for the rehabilitation of Kapichira Hydro power plant which was destroyed by storm Ana.

“My government is committed to clearing misunderstandings between Power market Limited PML and Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi ESCOM.”

Speaking earlier Development partners have asked Malawi government to clarify on the single buyer role between Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi ESCOM and Power Market Limited PML

Speaking during the inauguration of Golomoti solar Power plant project, David Perth who represented government of Britain, one of the funders of the project said lack of clarity on the matter has remained a stumbling block to investors in the energy sector.

Perth further said there is need for government to make policy decisions that would unleash private sector.

“Recent damage to Kapichira hydropower plant should encourage the country to diversify energy sector and end over reliance on hydro power,” Perth

In her remarks, consulate general for Switzerland, Sylvia Yiannakis, said infrastructural projects are crucial in effective public service and private sector to flourish.

She also said her country will continue to support energy transition and reduction of greenhouse gases.

Speaking earlier, German Ambassador to Malawi Ralph Timme man, said “Malawi must end overdependence on hydropower and diesel power generators which have proved to be inefficient.”

In his remarks, Chief Executive Officer for JCM Power, Chrison Ray, says as a company, they aim to create change in the energy industry.

Ray stated that JCM hopes to play an important part in power, committing to engage in different energy projects.
