Rights body sets May 28 for anti MEC chair demonstration

Human Rights Defenders Coalition HRDC says will hold demonstrations on 28th May to force Malawi Electoral Commission MEC Chairperson Justice Dr Jane Ansah and commissioners to resign

Speaking at a press briefing chairperson of HRDC Gift Trapence said they will demonstrate because Ansah and the commissioners are not stepping down after Supreme Court found them incompetent.

Trapence said ‘Ansah and the commissioners cannot be trusted to preside over fresh presidential polls because they mismanaged 21st May elections.’

In view of COVID-19 he said they will follow preventive measures during the demonstrations and asked the protesters to wear face masks.

In his remarks HRDC member Macdonald Sembereka said police should provide security to all Malawians equally.
Commenting HRDC national coordinator Luke Tembo asked inspector general of police to investigate all violence that has happened in the country including the torching of Tambala family.
