UTM Party Withdraws Witnesses in Elections Case

Constitutional court has adjourned presidential elections case to Tuesday September 17 2019.

The court has made the adjournment after lawyer of UTM party announced that they were not parading other witnesses.

Lawyer of UTM Chikosa Silungwe said the last witness was Bright Kawaga the fourth person to be cross examined by lawyers of Malawi Electoral Commission and President Professor Peter Mutharika and re-examined by his lawyer.

Silungwe said “we discussed the matter with the respondents in chambers in order to expedite the case.”

However, he requested for the adjournment to prepare well for the cross examination of 2nd petitioner who is president of Malawi Congress Party MCP Dr Lazarus Chakwera.

Lawyers of the respondents told the court that they accepted the request.

UTM has paraded four witnesses namely Dr Saulos Chilima, Mirriam Gwalidi, Darlington Ndasauka and Kawaga

On Wednesday Judge Hilley Potani announced that 11 witnesses of UTM which is the first petitioner in the case would be paraded from Thursday September 12.

Potani also declared that lawyers would be cross examining 4 or 5 witnesses a day.
