COWUMA Embarks on Harassment Sensitization Campaign in Work Places

Communications Workers Union of Malawi COWUMA has embarked on a three weeks sexual harassment sensitization campaign in work places.

In an interview with Radio Islam, COWUMA Womens’ Department Chairperson Easter Ulalo, said the union is expected to reach out to its 2000 plus branches in the country with the message.

According to Ulalo there was huge need to impart such knowledge to its members due to reports that have been received regarding sexual harassment at workplaces.

She said such malpractice has the potential of affecting dignity, productivity and image of the organizations as well as the nation at large.

Meanwhile, Ulalo says has received an overwhelming response from COWUMA’s members following the meetings.

In her remarks Niva Whayo, Vice General Secretary for COWUMA stressed the need for organisations to put in place sexual harassment policy to ensure safety of all workers.

Whayo said, as a union will be monitoring implementation of issues presented after the campaign and encouraged workers to report in order to curb the malpractice.

Commenting after the session the participants, appreciated the union for the activity, which they said, has been enlightening.
