HRDC Rejects Muluzi’s Request To End Demonstrations

Human Rights Defenders Coalition HRDC has rejected the request by former president Dr Bakili Muluzi to stop holding demonstrations aimed at forcing chairperson of Malawi Electoral Commission Justice Dr Jane Ansah to resign for mismanaging tripartite elections.

Muluzi made the request during their meeting at BCA residence in Blantyre.

He asked officials of HRDC who included Chairperson Timothy Mtambo and vice Gift Trapence to give him 7 days to speak to Ansah.

“I plead with HRDC to postpone Thursday demonstrations,” Muluzi said

However HRDC said the demonstrations are part of contact and dialogue hence asking Muluzi to discuss with Ansah tomorrow.

He invited on Monday HRDC to the meeting and in its response it said would attend only if held at another venue not BCA for security reasons and in the presence of Ansah and reporters.

HRDC then acknowledged receiving letters from Malawi Law Society and Malawi Human Rights Commission.
