Islamic Relief Malawi Assists Farmers With Irrigation Farming

Islamic Relief Malawi says will continue assisting farmers with irrigation farming in the country

Islamic Relief Malawi Country Director Sherifa Mia said this during a field day tour as the organization visited Limphangwi and Mulunga Irrigation schemes in Chikwawa district

“I am happy with farmer’s commitment on irrigation farming as this will help to reduce hunger in the district which was affected by floods that led to loss of crops,” Mia said

However, she expressed concern over the selling of farm inputs like fertilizer and seeds the farmers receive from her organization saying the behavior demotivates donors

Over 400 farmers are receiving support from Islamic Relief in Limphangwi and Mulunga Irrigation schemes in Chikwawa district

Meanwhile, government through ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and water development has commended Islamic Relief Malawi for its efforts in fighting against hunger in the country

Director of Agricultural Extension Services in the ministry Jelomy Chigonda Nkhoma said with this initiative the country will achieve food security

Chigonda Nkhoma said “I am very impressed with irrigation and crop diversification as government has also been encouraging farmers to adopt the same method.”
