Malawi & Japan Sign Road Improvement Grant

Malawi Government and Republic of Japan have signed grant agreement and exchange of notes for the implementation of a detailed design of the project for the improvement of main roads in the city of Lilongwe.

Speaking during the ceremony Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development Joseph Mwanamveka said the design will cover expansion of M1 Road between Lilongwe Hotel and Lubani junctions from 2 to 4 lanes, replacement of old town bridge and installation of traffic signals among others.

Mwanamveka said the construction project is expected to start after six months of developing the design.

“Government will set aside funds to compensate affected people,” he said

Speaking during the function Japanese ambassador to Malawi Kae Yanagisawa called on Ministry of transport and public to coordinate with stakeholders in the allocation of resources.

“Next time Japanese government will focus on air transport development in Malawi,” said Yanagisawa

In his remarks, Minister of Transport and public works Ralph Jooma said the project is beneficial since it will help in reducing congestion in the city and develop the country.
