Malawi President Asks Court To Struck Out Opposition Petitions

Lawyers of President Professor Peter Mutharika have asked High court to strike out both MCP and UTM consolidated petitions.

Dr Saulos Chilima and Dr Lazarus Chakwera are 1st and 2nd petitioners while Mutharika and Malawi Electoral commission 1st and 2nd respondents.

Messrs Mbeta and Company says the petitions be struck out for being irregular, incompetent, embarrassing and incurably defective.

The company further says “the 2nd petitioner has not filed an election petition known to the law within the prescribed 7 day period therefore shall be removed as a party.”

Hearing of the case is expected to happen on Friday 14th June, 2019 by judges of the High court sitting as constitutional court.

Chilima and Chakwera filed the petitions against results of presidential elections which were officially released by Malawi Electoral Commission after voters cast their ballots in 21 May, 2019 tripartite elections.
