Malawi President meets former presidents over cyclone Freddy

President Lazarus Chakwera has met former presidents Dr Bakili Muluzi and Dr Joyce Banda at Sanjika Palace in Blantyre

Addressing the nation through his Facebook page the president says he engaged Muluzi and Banda to tap into their pool of knowledge and global social capital as government seeks short and long term remedies for its people

Chakwera says Muluzi and Banda have presented valuable insights on how best they can provide immediate relief to the displaced then rebuild resiliently against climate-induced disasters.

He has disclosed that the two eminent citizens have pledged to support all efforts lined up by government in providing necessary respite to affected communities in the spirit of Operation Tigwirane Manja.

Chakwera says is humbled to receive such support from the two statespersons.

But former president Peter Mutharika did not attend the function despite government’s announcement that it invited him to the meeting
