Malawi suspends scrap metal exportation

Government has suspended exportation of scrap metal under goods regulations due to vandalism of public institutions

According to secretary ministry of trade and industry Christina Zakeyo  the suspension has been implemented together with Ministry of homeland security

Zakeyo says this has been necessitated following increased incidences of vandalism of ESCOM, Waterboard, Telecommunications and Transport infrastructure especially in railway lines

The public is therefore informed that issuance of export licences for scrap metals has been stopped forthwith and that all licences which were issued before this notice stand revoked and no export metal shall be entertained

During the 6 months export ban of scrap metals the two ministries will review the second hand and scrap metal dealers act of 1971 and develop regulations accompanying it.

In addition the ministries will conduct fresh registration of all second-hand and scrap metal dealers which will be done in collaboration with ministry of homeland security

Government will also formulate rules and standard operating procedures for scrap metal business in the country

Finally the two ministries call upon stakeholders to take note of this development and liase with the Malawi police service on the next steps to be undertaken in terms of registration which according to law will be done by ministry of homeland security through Malawi police
