MAM condemns damaging IIB

Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) has categorically condemned the damaging of Islamic Information Bureau IIB offices in Lilongwe.

The incident happened when Human Rights Defenders Coalition sympathizers were escorting Timothy Mtambo as he was going to hand himself to Lilongwe Area 3 Police station on March 10 2020.

According to the press statement made available to Radio Islam, MAM has learned with grief that the disgruntled people resorted to smash and damage the offices.

The statement signed by MAM Secretary General, Alhaji Twaibu Lawe, says the association respects the right to freedom of expression but must be expressed responsibly without infringing other people’s rights.

“IIB has been a focal point where Muslims and non-Muslims have been coming for their research and other related issues,” Alhaji Lawe says

The statement has also reminded Malawians that Section 28 of the Constitution allows acquisition of property either individually or collectively, therefore damaging of the offices contravenes the law of the land.

MAM is therefore urging all patriotic citizens to desist from actions likely to cause instability in the country
