Malawi Supreme Court dismisses MEC’s application on elections suspension

Supreme court of appeal has dismissed an application of Malawi Electoral Commission MEC for a stay order on the nullification of presidential elections by constitutional court.

MEC made the application on the basis of limited resources and time to run fresh election.

Speaking to Radio Islam lawyer of MEC Tamanda Chokotho said “the Supreme court has thrown out the application thereby ordering the commission to organize the election in a stipulated time frame of 150 days.”

On his part lawyer of UTM Chikosa Silungwe said expressed joy with the judgment saying the arguments of MEC fell short of merit.

Meanwhile, MCP president has told Malawians to prepare for polls slated for 19th May
