MEC shifts elections date

Malawi Electoral Commission MEC has shifted the fresh presidential elections to 2nd July from 19th May 2020 which was recommended by parliament.

MEC chairperson Justice Dr Jane Ansah has said this during the release and launch of electoral calendar in Blantyre.

Ansah said the elections will be held on the new date which is the 149th day from the 150 days set by the constitutional court.

“Voter registration will begin on 4th April to 7th June while verification from 17th to 18th June. Presentation of the nomination papers by candidates shall be held from 23rd to 24th April 2020,” MEC chair explains

Ansah says the commission is in the process of identifying a printer of ballot papers.

She further said the commission will use district tally centres and not constituency tally centres as ordered by the constitutional court.

Finally Ansah said due to the threat of Corona virus MEC  will put in place preventive measures and asked electoral stakeholders to join hands with government in preventing the pandemic.

The total budget of the elections is projected at 34 billion kwacha which Ansah said might be adjusted due to Corona virus.
