Minister requests employers, employees to build safety culture

As the world is commemorating day of safety and health at work, ministry of labor has requested employers and employees to work together in building a positive safety and health culture.

In her speech marking the commemoration in the country, the minister responsible Vera Kamtukule said human capital which is indispensable asset of any country must be safeguarded at all cost.

Kamtukule said it is heartbreaking when a skilled, semi-skilled or unskilled person suffers a work related injury, disease or death due to unfavorable conditions at workplaces.

She said economic cost of such does not only affect family but also the nation at large hence actions must be taken to prevent them.

Commenting on the theme “act together to build a positive safety and health culture Kamtukule said “it has come at an opportune time when covid-19 has taught the country lessons on the importance of embracing safety and health culture at the workplace.”

She said the theme is also fostering a strong occupation safety and health where every individual contributes to development of a culture of prevention at all levels.

“Only when safety and health is safeguarded everyone can actively participate in securing a safe working environment,” Kamtukule

She disclosed that her ministry is developing a national occupation safety and health policy to inform the review of legislation with the aim of fostering prevention of accidents and injury among others.

Kamtukule said if all parties at work are provided with freedom to express their concerns it will be easy to build safety and health culture.
