Ministry condemns police brutality in COVID-19 regulations enforcement

Ministry of homeland security has condemned police brutality in enforcing COVID-19 regulations

Minister Richard Chimwendo Banda says the ministry is concerned with reports that some police officers have been using excessive force in enforcing corona virus regulations

Banda says the reports emerged that some officers who were deployed on duty to enforce regulations have been using unnecessary force such as beating non-compliant citizens

According to Chimwendo Banda much as the Ministry values the role police officers are playing in ensuring that all citizens are complying with the gazetted regulations, they condemn some men in uniform for choosing to be brutal in enforcing those measures

“The behaviour of beating people and using any unnecessary force against non-compliant citizens is not acceptable in this era. The ministry will ensure that all officers who will be found using brutal means in enforcing the regulations are held accountable for their actions,” Chimwendo Banda

However, the Minister has urged the general public to always comply with all covid-19 containment measures that are put in place

He has advised the general public to note that it is a citizen’s obligation to ensure that they do not contract or transmit the disease to others

Therefore, everybody appearing in places has been told to ensure they wear mask all the time

The Ministry says will continue playing its role in ensuring that all regulations that have been put in place to fight covid-19 are adhered to.

The Minister has advised Malawians to report police officers who will be using excessive force against non compliant citizens
