Mutharika Reports Opposition to UN

President Professor Peter Mutharika has reported the opposition in Malawi to United Nations General Assembly that it has waged a vicious campaign of violence in the disguise of demonstrations because it is refusing to accept results of the presidential election in the May 21 elections.

In his 21 minute address to UNGA on Thursday Mutharika said the process was duly audited by United Nations affiliated network called BDO and was unanimously declared free, fair and credible by European Union, African Union, SADC and Commonwealth observer missions.

However he said the opposition led by Malawi Congress Party that ruled Malawi under dictatorship for thirty-one years decided not to accept the election.

“The opposition went to court but ignored the process and waged a vicious campaign of violence in the disguise of demonstrations,” Mutharika said

He said their violence betrayed a desire for ethnic cleansing, a desire for civil war, an attempt to demolish the economy and to make Malawi an ungovernable state of lawlessness.

Despite the provocation from the opposition, Mutharika said his government responded with peaceful resistance and insisted on the rule of law.

In his speech which was titled “For my country and the voiceless of the developing world” Mutharika repeated his last year’s call to United Nations to include Africa in the Security Council arguing that there are no small or poor nations in United Nations.

Mutharika said Africa, with 1.3 billion people cannot be sidelined from UN Security Council, arguing that it is a mockery for member states to meet and galvanize multilateral efforts while they marginalise and repress others.
