Parliament rejects report on abolishment of death penalty

Parliament has rejected a report on the abolishment of death penalty in the country’s constitution.

Chairperson of parliamentary committee on Legal affairs committee Peter Dimba presented the report in the house few days ago following consultations with various stakeholders in the country including religious leaders.

During the debate members of parliament said abolishment of the death penalty could result to recklessness among citizens.

Member of Parliament for Mulanje Bale Victor Musowa said it was only proper for murder culprits to face death as a punishment which will also deter would be offenders.

Muslim Association of Malawi is the only religious institution and stakeholder that rejected the abolishment of death penalty during consultations which were held by parliamentary committee on legal affairs in Blantyre, Lilongwe and Mzuzu.
