Parliament Speaker Suspends 2 MPs

Speaker of parliament has suspended MPs for Dowa east constituency Richard Chimwendo Banda and Blantyre City south east Sameer Suleman for 2 days.

Catherine Gotani Hara suspended them following misunderstandings when they were discussing the 7 thousand tons of rotten maize in ADMARC.

This happened after Minister of agriculture Kondwani Nankhumwa explained what happened, actions taken and how the maize will be disposed.

After Nankhumwa had made the statement Suleman as chairperson of parliamentary committee on agriculture clarified the matter and the speaker ordered him to sit down.

However he rose up again saying MCP member had insulted him but the speaker said he had disrespected her hence telling him to go out of the house.

This did not please government side saying “the speaker was taking sides and Suleman did not leave the parliament until the house was adjourned.”

In the afternoon the speaker said the business committee had suspended Suleiman for two days but the government side demanded the suspension of Chimwendo Banda because he did not leave the house on Wednesday when first deputy speaker Madalitso Kazombo had ordered him to leave.

This caused commotion in parliament therefore Hara also suspended Banda for 2 days.
