TUM calls for More Resources in Education Sector

As the country is commemorating teachers’ day, authorities have re-emphasized the need to make education a priority in order to take Malawi’s development to next level.

In an interview with Radio Islam, Teachers Union of Malawi TUM president Willie Malimba said teachers are demoralized due to a lot of challenges they are facing.

Malimba mentioned shortage of personnel, equipment and financial hardships as some of the issues affecting teachers.

He said Tum has been engaging government on the issues but to no avail

Malimba said only when more resources are pumped into education sector a lot will improve.

Concurring with Malimba South west division inclusive education coordinator Ellard Katanda says shortage of special needs teachers is hindering special needs learners from acquiring essential education.

Katanda stresses that although the country has seen an improvement on performance of special needs learners in 2022-2023 academic year there is need to ensure presence of special needs teachers in every school.

He has encouraged special needs teachers to double their efforts despite presence of the challenges.
