Malawi Holds Youth Conference on Climate Change

Ministry of energy, mining and natural resources has commended the youths in the country for taking a leading role in the management of environment and fight against climate change.

Deputy Director of environmental affairs in the ministry Michael Makonombera has made the remarks during the opening of 2019 national youth conference on climate change in Lilongwe.

This year’s national youth conference is taking place under the theme “Enhancing youth leadership and movement in tracking climate change in Malawi.

The three days conference which has commenced on Tuesday is expected to end on 26th September.

The conference discusses key issues that affect the youth such as innovative agriculture, climate justice and renewable energy.

Speaking Deputy Director of environmental affairs in the ministry Michael Makonombera said government is doing all it can to ensure young people are involved in several issues including climate change.

“There is need for stakeholders to contribute their efforts to support the youth in the fight against climate change,”Makonombera

Speaking on behalf of the youth Delilah Mbvundula said it is indeed time for young people to take action against climate change in Malawi.

Mbvundula said this year’s conference is very important because it will provide an opportunity to discuss innovative solutions to climate change.

“The youth have skills and knowledge but lack support from relevant authorities hence the need to be engaged in various decisions,” said Mbvundula

He then called upon the youth in the country to join the movement to deal with climate change.

This is the second conference since the youth conducted a first one in April 2018.
