Chinese national arrested over ivory necklases
A Chinese national who was working for Bingu national Stadium has been arrested by police for being found in possession of 2 ivory necklaces at Kamuxu International Airport in Lilongwe.
KIA Police spokesperson, Sapulain Chitonde said 46 year old Houcai Xhang was arrested when he was about to leave the country for his homeland to seek for medical attention.
“You know that our constitution allows giving bail to a suspect therefore because he is ill we decided to do so,” said Chitonde.
Chitonde said Xhang is today, Tuesday 21st june appearing before the Mkukula First Grade magistrate court in Lumbadxi, to answer a charge of illegal exportation of Ivory which is contrary to section 98 of the National Parks and Wildlife Act.
Recently deputy ambasador of US to Malawi was arrested at Kamuxu International Airport for possessing an ivory but was released shortly.
