Junior staff close Karonga DC offices

As conflict between district councils and their direct employees on salary issues persist in Malawi, irate workers of Karonga district council have today shut down offices of their bosses in demand for their three months salary.

Speaking in an interview with radio Islam one of the group leaders Happy Harawa said they will not be let down by anyone till the council pays them their three months salary.

“We have tried different methods to receive the money but to no avail,” revealed Harawa

He wondered why the workers should not receive their salaries despite their effort in doing their mandated job such as collecting taxes as well as sweeping the council premises.

“The development has forced us to go into unnecessary loans apart from selling their properties therefore we will continue boycotting the work if the council is mum on our demand,” threatened Harawa.

However, efforts to talk with the council officials proved futile as they all failed to answer their mobile phones when contacted.

Meanwhile, vendors in the district have disclosed that will stop paying taxes if the council fails to clean the market.
