MEC Removes Dr Cassim Chilumpha

Malawi Electoral commission MEC has removed former vice president Dr Cassim Chilumpha on the list of presidential candidates.

Spokesperson of MEC Sangwani Mwafulirwa says they had made the decision as per ruling of the High court that Dr Chilumpha cannot represent Tikonze Peoples Movement TPM in the forthcoming tripartite elections on 21 May 2019.

In the morning Dr Chilumpha said the ruling puts democracy in jeopardy.

He said this during a press briefing in Blantyre a few days after the court made the judgment.

Speaking to journalists Dr Chilumpha said he did not receive any complaint letter from court.

He also said the court passed the judgment without hearing from his party.

Dr Chilumpha who was visibly angry said the ruling is not fair to him and Tikonze Peoples Movement.

He further said will wait for MEC’s decision on the matter.
