Malawi declares 21 day lockdown

Government of Malawi has announced a 21 day lockdown which will restrict the movement of people in order to minimize the spread of corona virus COVID-19.

Announcing the lockdown Tuesday night president professor Peter Mutharika said it will begin during the night of 18th April to 9th May but may be extended.

Mutharika urged Malawians to fully comply with the measures because they are for the good of the country.

“Government will continue taking actions that should save lives,” the president said

In his remarks Minister of health Jappie Mhango said the lockdown will be guided by the regulations that have been gazetted by government.

Mhango expressed that the lockdown shall apply to all districts of Malawi.

Reacting, citizens in Blantyre city have expressed concern on the lockdown saying “we are not ready for it because they depend on temporary jobs for daily needs,”

Therefore, they recommended government to put in place measures which are beneficial to needy people.
