Malawi Presidential Candidates Debate

Three presidential candidates have debated on critical issues of agriculture, health, education, economy and corruption.

The presidential candidates are Dr Lazarus Chakwera of MCP, Dr Saulos Chilima of UTM and Atupele Muluzi of UDF.

Speaking during the opening of the debate at BICC in Lilongwe last night Chairperson of the Presidential taskforce Teresa Temweka Ndanga said their participation indicates their commitment towards development of the country.

According to Ndanga, the Presidential candidates have demonstrated their transparency and accountability.

Ndanga said the debate provides unique opportunity to candidates to express their ideas to Malawians in order to make informed decisions.

She added that even if the debaters lose tripartite elections, their ideas might be useful in future

Ndanga commended organizations that supported the debate

In the first phase of the debate, candidates were asked to say why people should vote for them.
Muluzi said he is an experienced candidate who can save the nation

Chakwera said is the right character with right vision while Saulos Chilima of UTM said he is a real Malawian who knows problems of the country.

On Farm Input Subsidy Program presidents of UTM and MCP said it is not benefiting poor farmers.

On education sector all the debaters proposed improvement of education by providing quality services and materials

Muluzi and Chilima promise to provide quality health services while Chakwera emphasized on the allocation of 15% of the national budget to health sector.

They all emphasized to deal with corruption amongst government officials in the country once voted into office

However, Muluzi kept on criticizing manifestos of UTM and MCP.

Other presidential debates are expected to be conducted on 2nd and 5th April, 2019 in Lilongwe
