MEC Appeals To Media Managers To Exercise Reason On Elections

Malawi Electoral Commission MEC has appealed to media managers to exercise reason as the country is in elections period.

MEC Commissioner Mary nkosi made the appeal in Lilongwe during the opening of a three day workshop for media managers on developing toolkit on implementation of media code of conduct.

Nkosi said media managers should be cautious that the material they approve to be broadcast or published does not perpetuate conflict.

“Media managers play a crucial role in disseminating information on elections to the public,” said commissioner Nkosi.

She called for their maximum attention and inputs on the drafted toolkit.

“The toolkit has been drafted by MISA Malawi and PANOS to guide media houses on how to implement the guidelines on elections,” added Nkosi

She said the workshop is being held with support from commonwealth.

Meanwhile, MEC has assured Malawians that 2019 tripartite elections will not be rigged.

MEC director of Communications Sangwani Mwafulirwa made the assurance following continued statements by leaders of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party Professor Peter Mutharika who is Malawi president and leader of UTM party Dr Saulos Chilima who is vice president that the elections will be rigged.

Mwafulirwa said the commission is closely monitoring the electoral system hence dispelling assertions that biometric voting might be used in the rigging.
