Staff Demand Mzuzu University Closure

Mzuzu university staff demand closure of the institution saying they will not provide any service unless students are sent back to their homes.

This was presented in a MEMO to University after a meeting where they expressed their stand on the students’ victimization and damage of property belonging to the staff as well as surrounding community.

Mzuzu university students on Monday demonstrated against vice chancellor decision not to allow students to access their end of semester examinations due to fees balances.

Among the issues that ignited anger was that students are not allowed to register for the academic semester until they pay half of the fees which is difficult for many students.

After demonstrations the university issued a MEMO to inform the students community that “we will start registration and those with fees issues should meet relevant authorities as one way of reducing the chaos.”

On Tuesday, members of the academic and non academic staff also issued a MEMO to ask the university to close the institution, failure to do so they will not provide any service to the students.

In their meeting the staff came up with several resolutions and one of them was that “we are not safe to provide services therefore students must go to their homes.”

Meanwhile, the university has condemned the violence saying students decided to stage the march while it had been engaging with their union to resolve the matter.

Now the university has also sent a MEMO to all staff members as a call for a meeting on 30 October, 2019 to respond to the proposal on the closure of the school and students violent protest.
