Malawi’s Quran Competition winner shines at World Quran Competition

The 2022 Malawi’s National Holy Quran Competition winner has finished on position 17 in the world Quran Competition which took place in United Arab Emirates.

Out of participants from over 75 countries, Hassan Mussa braved his fears to secure himself a place in the top 20.

Speaking upon arrival in the country Hassan Mussah, could not hide his happiness but said could have been happier if he finished in the top 10.

“Taking part in this competition is something that I will always remember. This was my first time to compete at the international level and I am grateful and thankful to Allah that I was in a country that I thought I would never have been”.

Hassan said losing his voice and language were some of the challenges that he faced during the competition.

“What I observed is that they had enough time to for preparation, they only focus on Quran. But for me time was not enough.

Language was also was a challenge because you know here in Malawi we speak Chichewa and English, but people I met there were failing to even speak English they were only speaking their own language not even Arabic, so it was somehow hard to communicate”.

He thanked national holy Quran Competition Committee for the efforts hence encouraging them to continue the great work to reach out to many.

“May Allah give them a long and Healthy life”.

Hassan said is planning to record his recitation for the benefit of others.

“I am also planning to approach some Quran memorizers to perfect my recitation”

Meanwhile, national holy Quran competition coordinator sheikh Raad Kangomba the performance portrays the efforts the committee is putting into the exercise.

Sheikh Kangomba praised the performance of Hassan adding he could have done better had he not lost his voice.

“This is very impressive, he managed to defeat participants from countries where Quran recitation and memorization is given much focus.

You know he is a student at Blantyre International University while also focusing on the memorization and recitation of the Quran, so we are so impressed”, said Sheikh Kangomba.

Moving forward sheikh Kangomba said the committee is planning to train sheikhs in a bid to meet standards of Quran recitation and memorization.

Added sheikh Kangomba that, “At the competition what they see is not only memorization, most of the times they look at the rules of reciting the holy Quran that is Tajweed.  So we are thinking of training our sheikhs of course they know but may be what were emphasizing is just memorizing but we want them to start at the grass root”.
