LEAD to conduct food & water research in Malawi

Leadership for Environment and Development (LEAD) will conduct a research project in water management and food security in the country.

LEAD executive director, Professor Sosten Chiotha said this at a meeting with stakeholders in Zomba.

Professor Chiotha said “the project which is called Building Research Capacity for sustainable water and food security in dry lands in africa (BRECcIA) will look at ways of managing water resource and how Malawi can be food secure even with climate change.”

He said Malawi will benefit from this research because there are so many unanswered questions on climate change.

“The project will incorporate government and any organization that deals with environment and food security,” Professor Chiotha said

Speaking on the same, Dr. Mangani Katundu from Chancellor College who are partners in the project said was happy that environmental organizations were giving their contributions.

“This project, which is being championed by the University of Southampton, will provide capacity building as it will engage four people who will finish their post doctoral degrees,” Katundu said.

The four year research project will run up to 2021 and is being conducted in 3 countries of Malawi, Kenya and Ghana.

Among the notable stakeholders are department of environmental affairs, centre for environmental policy and advocacy (CEPA), civil society network on climate change (CISONECC) and journalists from different media houses.
