Malawi terminates Aggreko Contract

Minister of Energy Ibrahim Matola says Malawians should not panic with news of phasing out of Aggreko services.

Matola has said this following public outcry on anticipated power outages as Aggreko services are expected to phase out on 23rd April 2022.

Aggreko has been adding 78 megawatts to national grid since 2018 which saw the increase in electricity tariffs with 24.67%.

According to Matola Aggreko was a temporary source of energy hence stakeholders agreed to halt its operations which were deemed exorbitant.

“EGENCO will fill the space of Aggreko including other measures that have been identified to ensure sustainability of power provision to Malawians,” Matola

Speaking during the same function director of finance at ESCOM Clement Kanyama said the corporation has been approaching all major consumers of energy to see how best they can shift part of their production from peak hours to hours where consumption is lower.

“ESCOM has been engaging various market participants for efficient energy consumption programs  and the efforts have helped to reduce load shedding to 4 from the initial 6 hours,” Kanyama

He also said ESCOM will soon introduce feeder meters to identify where energy losses are occurring in a bid to maximize use of the produced energy.
