Some of the demonstrators broke into shops and stole various commodities while others collected teargas canisters
Meanwhile Concerned Mzuzu City Vendors and consumers have notified district commissioner of Mbelwa Council to hold a peaceful march on 4th March
The consumers and vendors of Mzuzu city representing various markets and transportation operators say the purpose of the march is to express their grievances regarding rising cost of goods and services
They say the exorbitant prices have severely impacted their businesses and daily lives
According to them the march will commence at Vigwagwa Market to office of district commissioner where they will deliver a petition outlining concerns and proposed solutions
In a related development Police has arrested 26 people in connection to Thursday’s violent demonstrations in Limbe
Speaking in an interview with Radio Islam, Limbe Police spokesperson, Aubrey Singanyama, says some people who joined the demonstrators looted shops and destroyed properties.
Singanyama has indicated that those arrested will answer different charges levelled against them in court soon
He says police acknowledges people’s rights to demonstrate but advises them to follow lay down procedures to avoid such incidents.
