post disaster needs assessment report launched

Department of Disaster Risk Management Affairs says it needs two hundred billion Kwacha to restore the property which was damaged or lost due to floods.

It has said this during the official launch of the post disaster needs assessment report.

Presenting the report one of the officials of the department Mr Chinangwa said in order to prevent facing effects of disasters in future it has adopted the build back better, build back matter strategy.

“The policy encourages building structures which can withstand disasters,” he said.

In his remarks president Professor Peter Mutharika appealed to stakeholders to work with government in order to alleviate effects of disasters.

“Let me ask all partners of government to avoid duplicating its efforts,” Mutharika expressed.

Speaking earlier representative of European Union said his organization is disappointed to note that Malawi failed to abide by the disaster needs assessment report of 2012.

He has therefore advised government to get prepared for future disasters, control population growth and reduce poverty.
